The Fourth of July seems to be about blowing stuff up as much as it is celebrating Independence Day.
Even when I was a kid, I didn’t much care for going out to see the fireworks displays. It never made that much sense to me. Standing or sitting in the hot July stickiness watching fire trail off into the sky for a big bang and a shower of sparks has never been my idea of fun.
As a matter of fact, I hate it.
I dated a girl for six years who loved going out to these “events”. I dreaded ever Fourth of July with her because I knew that she would beg me to go to these things. I’m not sure but I think that she succeeded only once. Trying to get me to go to a Fourth of July fireworks show is like trying to ride a horse through a burning building.
I don’t like putting up with the traffic. I don’t like the heat and humidity. I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about. It is only fireworks. I’m not saying that watching fireworks is something for folks with low IQ’s; I’m just saying that I’d rather watch something else.
So last night on July 3rd, I did just that. While everyone else in Greensboro was at Grimsley and the surrounding area for the fireworks display, I was at home watching something else. It takes a little more than gunpowder and loud noises to impress me. If I wanted to see any of the fireworks, why bother going out there with everyone else? Why not stay at home, do what you want and watch the highlights on the 11 O’clock news?
My phone didn’t ring last night and there was no one around, it was FANTASTIC!
I got to finish season one of ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ on DVD from Netflix. I watched a program on the BTK Killer on The Learning Channel and I turned in early for some much needed sleep.
After I “proofread” this, I realized that I do enjoy fireworks at times. I like them incorporated into my rock concerts. Take a KISS concert for example… There are lots of fireworks displays at their shows. I guess that I just enjoy some different type of music besides the 1812 Overture with my fireworks.
Well, that’s enough from me. I haven’t had the time for writing as much as I like to. Summer is the busy season for radio geeks like me.
I did provide a link at the top to a site that inspired me to write down crap that you’re reading right now so, check it out. It’s from a guy that I used to work with at Peaches Music & Video on High Point Road here in Greensboro. Be warned, you will laugh your ass off. Check out The West Virginia Surf Report.
