Saturday night, Marcia Gan and myself attended a welcome/send-off party at Slim’s house in High Point. The lovely former WFMYNews2 meteorologist (now with Weatherbug.com) Rachel Peterson was in town visiting friends and Brandy (don’t know last name) was leaving the ACC here in Greensboro. So it was like a “good to have you back” and “hate to see ya go” kind of shindig.
Slim and Rachel were once roommates. Slim also worked with Brandy who was leaving to go work with Florida State University. There was plenty of meat on the grill as a summer cold stricken Slim watched over the cooking.
Every time I got near the bottom of my beer bottle, Rachel was always putting another into my hand. What a good friend to have, huh?
Towards the end of the evening, Slim broke out some fireworks and fired those jokers into the night sky. Just as every one came out of the house to see what the hubbub was about, one of the cardboard casings came back down onto the table we were standing around. The table’s surface was thick glass and that casing came down hard, throw out a few sparks, and bounced over Brandy’s head.
Around 11:30pm, Rachel and Jason headed to the grocery store to secure the makings for S’mores. When they got back, that’s when Marcia and I called it a night. Marcia isn’t one for staying out too late.
I went back home and contemplated watching one of the three movies from Netflix. But it was late. I decided to go with an episode of Deadwood season 2. I couldn’t stay up too late because I had to get up early and do a KZL remote over in Winston-Salem.
This was the third year in a row where I haven’t been able to watch the NASCAR race live from Indy. Why is that?
Oh well, I had to watch it later on Memorex.
I did manage to lift my self-imposed ban on fried foods by stopping by Long John Silver’s on the way back to the radio station. LJS is my favorite fast food joint and I just couldn’t pass up the chance when one was on the return trip. I got a fish and chicken combo with fries and two hushpuppies and a side of clams. Every item spent a little time in the deep fryer and I was worried what that would do to my digestive system.
I’ll admit this… The food didn’t have the same magical qualities or tastes that I love so much. Since I’ve changed my diet a little, most fried items taste like crap to me. But this wasn’t the case with LJS. It still tasted good. It just sat in my stomach a little heavier than usual. And later in the evening as I watched the race, I started feeling a little discomfort as my stomach dealt with all the deep-fried goodness. I thought for sure that I would spend a little time in the bathroom exorcising the fried demons from my body, but it didn’t happen.
I tried watching The Libertine starring Johnny Depp, but it got so boring that I started up a load of laundry. It wasn’t too long afterwards that I just pulled that sucker out of the DVD player and readied it for shipping back. I didn’t even finish it because it was so boring. I rated it only 2 stars on Netflix, which means that I “didn’t really like it”.
I loaded up the next choice, The Recruit starring Colin “somebody” and Al Pacino. It turned out to be formulaic and predictable. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars meaning that I “liked it”.
Last night, I watched About Schmidt starring Jack Nicholson. Why Kathy Bates had to get naked, I don’t know or want to think about. But I found the movie enjoyable and I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars. That means that I “really liked it”.

Well, that’s about all from me. I’m going to get off this computer and embrace my “geek” side by watching disc 2, season 1 of Star Trek: Voyager. So far, that series is only getting 3 stars from me. It’s an all right series, but it’s not throwing me into spastic geek fits of worship.
